Product Description Offering high performance features at a low price, the Satellite A15 Series helps new notebook users step into the mobile world. Featuring built-in DVD and CD recording capabilities and a convenient upgrade to wireless connectivity, any students, families and small businesses can work and play with greater mobility, productivity and ease.
Amazon.com Product Description Featuring a cost-effective Intel Celeron processor and middle-of-the-road accouterments, the Toshiba Satellite A15-S129 Notebook is a wise choice for budget-conscious individuals, students and professionals who need a mobile computer that'll handle the basics. Although part of the entry-level Celeron line, the system's processor is nevertheless the most sophisticated mobile Celeron available, the 2.4 GHz model. Featuring a fast 400 MHz system bus clock speed and 256 MB Level 2 cache, this CPU is both fast and affordable. Accompanying the Celeron is 256 MB of RAM memory (expandable to 1024 MB) and an Intel 852GM graphics chipset with 32 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. Accordingly, the Satellite A15-S129 can't be called upon for complex 3-D rendering, high-end games or ultra-demanding business environments. It is, however, perfectly satisfactory for standard word processing, database and spreadsheet activities, contact management, and Internet surfing. Measuring 13 by 11.5 by 1.5 inches and tipping the scales at just 6.3 pounds, the Satellite A15-S129 is comparatively compact and comfortably lightweight. Under the hood you'll find such amenities as integrated stereo speakers, a full-size 85-key keyboard with 12 function keys and a TouchPad pointing device, an adequate 40 GB hard disk and a generous 15-inch active-matrix display (1024x768 maximum resolution). With the integrated DVD/CD-RW drive, you can burn and listen to audio CDs, archive files, and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. In this stock configuration, the unit does not permit DVD burning. Connectivity options are plentiful but not particularly state-of-the-art. Though the system does feature two USB ports for plug and play peripherals, an integrated 56K modem and an RJ-45 LAN network port, it does not include high-speed USB 2.0 ports or a FireWire port (often used to link devices such as digital camcorders). Furthermore, wireless networking is available only as an option. Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works and Intuit Quicken New User Edition 2003. Battery life is estimated at a commendable 3.13 hours.

Fan problems, overheating problems - mine, too July 17, 2007 I bought the notebook in 2004, and performance was fine. As XP and MS Office updated themselves--and, to be fair, as I loaded additional software--performance got slower and slower. Loading an Internet browser took up to a minute (and often more, when my wife would click again and again on the Quick Launch icon, seeing no response). Eventually I added a 512 MB memory stick for a total of 768 MB, and that fixed the slow-loading problem.
Meanwhile, the computer started to shut down without warning, and after searching the Internet, I figured out that it was overheating. I tried to clean the fan area, but there was hardly any dust there. So now the computer is up on a few kids' play blocks to keep air circulating underneath, and even with that, it shuts down during full virus scans and spyware scans.
The fan has now been making erratic noises. Sometimes it starts up, sometimes it clicks, sometimes it doesn't run. Next project is replacing the fan. I'd like to find a way to lubricate the fan and see if that helps, but it seems to be a closed unit.
Toshiba sure doesn't make it easy to repair this unit, with almost no resources online for the overheating and fan problems that seem to be endemic to this computer, and it seems that it often needs some major repairs, particularly to the cooling. Although the computer was okay for the first year or so, I can't really recommend it because of the problems after that.
Affordable - but comes with a catch !! July 7, 2007 Bought this on Black Friday 2003. Thankfully I purchased a 3 year warranty because I used it up! Two power adapters, two displays, and a cooling fan replaced. This thing runs slow and HOT. I upgraded another 512 of memory and checked the cooling fan and it is working. Unit runs so hot it shuts itself down. Last week it finally told me why, the harddrive started grinding and crashed! Now I need to decide if the cost of a new HDD is even worth it. I may just put the money into another unit instead.
3.5 Years Later: Completely Reliable June 24, 2007 I recieved this laptop as a birthday present 3-and-a-half years ago, and boy, was I happy. And I still am. I have had a grand total of 4 problems with this computer, two of which were major viruses, another one when my hard drive crashed, and another one where the fan stopped working. I clearly could have avoided getting the viruses, but seeing as if I was only 13 back when I got them, I didn't really know how to navigate the internet and avoid websites that had the potential to be dangerous. The hard drive issue, I also blame on myself, seeing as how the computer tends to heat up quite a lot, and I used to keep it on a cloth sofa for hours. I guess the hard drive, which is located right next to the fan, just got extremely hot and stopped working. As for the fan issue, it wasn't too bad. My friends father applied some lubricant onto it and it was up and running in a matter of seconds. Besides buying a new hard drive for this computer, I haven't done any other upgrades. I'm still running XP, 256 MB RAM, and the same DVD-ROM/CD-RW multifunction drive. I tend to run many programs at once, and of course, the performance slows down, but seeing as how some of the programs include Word 2007 (or other Office 2007 programs), iTunes, and Microsoft Visual Studio, I'm still happy with the performance I get out of only 256 MB of RAM. I am completely satisfied with Windows XP, and seeing as how it is almost time for me to go off to college, I am shopping around for a new laptop with Vista and TONS of cool features. Even after I get that new laptop, I will still love this computer. For a computer that was free (and even if I did buy it, it's pricetag wouldn't have been too big), I couldn't be happier.
Toshiba Satellite A15-S129 May 13, 2007 I purchased this laptop 2 years ago. I have not had any serious problems with it. I know it is recommended not to leave the laptop plugged in while not in use (It can damage the monitor). It is a pretty decent laptop for basic use for spreadsheets, word processing, and other low memeory using software.
Pros: - Good deal for the money. - 2.4 Ghz processor. - Good memory upgrade. - 40 GB IDE Hard Drive. - High speed internet card.
Cons: - The battery charge does last very long. - The video card has only 32 MB of built in RAM on the motherboard. (Slow startup) - Cannot upgrade video card to include more memory.

not a single problem, typing on it as we speak March 2, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had this for around 4 years, use it at least 5 hours a day, and have never had a problem. I did upgrade the memory and added a dvd-burner and that's it.
It does get warm, which all laptops do, mine has never shut off or had problems. I am wondering if the people with the overheating problem have ever popped the cover off and cleaned the fan and heatsink? Probably takes 10 minutes.
I paid well under $500 for it 4 years ago brand new, and couldn't have been happier with the purchase. Not sure what everyone is expecting.
