Amazon.com Product Description
Balance your need for productivity with great multimedia performance with the HP Pavilion dv9830us notebook PC, which features an amazingly bright, widescreen 17-inch BrightView display--perfect for multitasking between document windows and watching movies in their native aspect ratio. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Control playback settings from up to 10 feet away with the included remote control, which stores conveniently in the ExpressCard slot. This notebook also incorporates a Blu-ray drive that's compatible with the new high-definition DVD disc format. And you can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner, which also includes LightScribe technology for personalized silkscreen-quality, laser-etched CD/DVD labels.

This stylish laptop also features a high-gloss, durable HP Imprint finish with the Radiance pattern of concentric waves, as well as a subtle blue backlit media control panel that responds to the slightest touch. It also has an integrated 1.3-megapixel WebCam (and integrated microphone), enabling easy video conferencing via VoIP and video IM chats.

It's powered by the 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. Other hardware features include a 320 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (maximum capacity), an integrated Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS video/graphics card with up to 2303 MB of total allocated video memory, quad-mode Wi-Fi LAN (802.11a/b/g/n), HDMI A/V output, Gigabit Ethernet, and multi-format memory card reader.

This laptop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 1), which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The extra large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).

  • Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity for this notebook. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed and boosts the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card.

  • DVD/CD Drive: This HP notebook offers the next generation of DVD entertainment with the Blu-ray ROM optical drive, which provides the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound as well as backward compatibility with standard DVD movie discs as well as content burned onto DVDRW. It also incorporates a DVDRW writer that can also burn CDs, which is compatible with dual-layer (DL) discs that can hold up to 8.5 GB of data.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard (with integrated numeric keypad) and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio
The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) provides a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen. Video is powered by the integrated Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS graphics/video card, which provides up to 2303 MB of total graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista (512 MB dedicated RAM) for unmatched HD video performance on a notebook PC. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), it lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications. Experience real-time photo editing, or immerse yourself in the most complex, true-to-life gaming environments.

The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 HDMI output (for connecting to a compatible HDTV or home theater receiver for uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable)
  • Analog video out: 1 VGA monitor port and 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV or projector
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
  • 2 headphone jacks, 1 microphone jack
  • 1 Expansion Port 3 connector (for use with the HP xb3000 Expansion Base or the HP Notebook QuickDock)
  • 1 IR receiver
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
  • 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet
  • 56K modem (V.90)

1 out of 5 stars Heat/harddrive issues. Oh yeah, Vista sucks   November 20, 2008
So... this thing is beautiful. When it is working, it is a wonderful thing. But then, sooner or later, you will notice the laptop getting hot from the bottom center area. The you will notice applications getting hard to open up and taking time. Many programs like the internet or media player will show you "failure to respond" notices and close. Then...your harddrive will fail. you will be unable to retrieve any info. HP's customer service is pretty good. Within 10 minutes they were able to figure out that the drive died and were already setting me up with delivery for a new HD. (mind you- this was within 6 months of owning it.) Unlike Dell, they do not send a technician free of charge to your house. They have you call them for instructions. Second, they demand your credit information and threaten to bill you if you do not send the broken Harddrive to them within 3 days of recieving the new one. Now, seems like the new one is doing okay so far. media player doesn't crash like the old HD did. But, I am noticing the underside getting hot now. I have my laptop raised on vitamin water caps on all four (works, trust me) and have a small desk fan run cool air underneath. One thing, i upgraded the Norton antivirus program it comes with after 60 days to Norton 2.0 360. Not sure if that may have caused the crashes or not. only time will tell. I wish I would have bought a Toshiba or Dell. Save your money or buy extended full waranty. trust me.

2 out of 5 stars Major heat issues caused it to break after a year...   September 22, 2008

I purchased this system in January of '07. It had always given off a lot of heat so I purchased a laptop cooler. However, it still ran very hot.

One day, I realized that it would not close all the way. When I opened it up, I realized that the plastic bezel around the screen had expanded from the heat and actually split apart. I call HP technical support and even though it was still under warranty by one day, they said I must have damaged it because "it was impossible" for the bezel to come apart like that. They said I could send it in to be fixed but it would cost 700.00 to fix the display (the entire system had only cost 1000.00).

I called back another couple of days later and they said they couldn't help me since the laptop was no longer under warranty.

HP had always had a reputation for solidly built PCs. However after the problems I had with this system and the lack of sufficient support and the actual rudeness associated with tech support basically accusing me of lying, I will never by another HP computer system again.

The brand and the construction has just gone way down hill and there are many better alternatives out there -- including Lenovo (stick to the thinkpad series) and the Acer line (which I have a new respect for -- they seem to be built as well as the older HPs and are a lot cheaper)

5 out of 5 stars Works for me!   September 1, 2008
After the initial excitement left and I started loading various products and upgrades, I'm still impressed with the HP's capacity, performance and capabilities. Video streaming has been working well, easy link up to my home router and cable broadband. Been studying the TV links - what was included and the product called Slingbox. Played a few regular DVDs and all has been working as advertised. Minor criticism on the right shift key size but I can see it was a design choice that had little other options.

3 out of 5 stars Vista Experience 2.5......   August 26, 2008
0 out of 2 found this review helpful

This laptop was a very large disappointment after the heightened expectations that developed after reading the product description and the reviews...I think the shills might have been busy on this product.

First, it is SLOW. This may be more a Vista problem than a HP problem, but it is slow. The Dell 1505e (1gb mem, 1.6mz Intel Dual Core) that I replaced with this ran XP much faster than this runs Vista. Booting and restarting from sleep takes forever and every screen change is an opportunity to do something else while it loads.

Second, the NVIDIA card is a complete oversell. The gaming graphics card is the "weak link" responsible for the 2.5 Vista Experience according to the Vista analysis. I bought a few current game titles just to take a look, GRID and Battlefield 2 and they simply overwhelm the machine. GRID, a Vista game, simply won't load, even after all the processes are stripped and the graphics are dialed back. It is like playing under a strobe. Battlefield2 is a few years older and still plays in stop-action.
Finally, and most surprisingly, the 3 media players included (maybe more, I stripped out alot of the crapware)barely play without stuttering. PowerDVD, my preferred media player for years, barely functions, and only after, again, all the non-critical processes are stopped. After a little investigation I learned that these titles require a Vista Experience rating of from 4.0 to 5.0. Again this machine has a 2.5 rating based on the NVIDIA card. This was very surprising and very disappointing piece of information.

In sum, if you are looking for a machine to surf and spider solitare on, then this would do just fine, but it seems that you could find another alot cheaper to fill that bill. If you want the high performance that this machine promises, I'd keep shopping.
