My Gateway EC14D07u June 22, 2010 Stan Sander (Perryville, MO USA) I wanted a mini computer for travel but with lots of power. Netbooks fell fall short of providing what I needed. Most only have a max of 2 gigs of ram and no on board optical drive. The EC14DO7u came with 4 gig of ram, dual core Intel Pentium processor, built in optical drive, HDMI output, Dolby surround sound with any headphones, plus a great display. The battery life is just about as advertised. My Nephews graduation was being streamed by his school. I streamed the program from my network to my laptop and then to my 50" plasma via the HDMI output. My wife and I had the best seats in the house for the graduation. After 1.5 hours I still had 78% battery power left. If you want a laptop that is ultra portable but has all the great features of a desktop then I would rate this computer 4.999 of 5 stars. I had a mini Sony prior to this machine and for the price the Gateway is a much better value. The only problem with this machine is that retailers cant keep them on the shelf.
Awesome May 11, 2010 D. Peternel (Milwaukee, WI) I agree with all reviews thus far. I've had the machine for about a month now. After considering NETBOOKS and the fact they lack DVD drives, I found exactly what I was looking for...Battery life is perfect...surf and simple tasks: 6 plus hours...Kids can easily watch TWO full movies in the car with nothing but their headphones attached to it, no need to attach all that other junk to ensure power doesn't run out (EASY!!!!)...It is worth the extra money to get a fully functional (READ: DVD DRIVE!!!!!) notebook computer over any NETBOOK...don't be fooled, you will miss the DVD drive when loading software or using it to watch a movie...It is powerful enough to do anything I throw at it and only slightly heavier (3.5 lbs) than the smallest (10") netbook (A TOY, compared to this thing)...Speakers are good enough compared to some woeful other netbooks. Got a blu tooth mouse with the little dongle and leave it in there since I am not a fan of any notebook's internal mouse pad. Did I mention it has a DVD drive!!! I'm not the biggest Gateway fan (1st computer from them), but IT is the portable notebook to get that doesn't cost big money...Get it if you have been considering a netbook because the DVD makes it so not a NETBOOK!!!
Awesome machine for its price and size May 11, 2010 Angelmind (AR, USA) I have had my laptop for a couple of months and it is a fantastic little machine. When I got it out of the box, turned it on and started surfing the Internet, its speed was lightening fast. It is very light and portable, while also being sturdy. The keyboard has very large keys and it is very easy to type with although, sometimes, if you pressure the area just in front of the keyboard it will type weird things. Another minor issue is that the top gets scratched easily and since this machine's size is somewhat new, there are not that many covers that fit this size snugly.
Since I have not needed to use this machine much on the road, I have it hooked up to a big screen and I purchased a wireless mouse and keyboard. This has allowed me to use this laptop just as I would a desktop. The 3 USB ports are rather nice to have since the Bluetooth dongle occupies one but it sure is nice to have a couple of extra. The CD drive is what attracted me the most. We still need CDs to install all sorts of software like printer/scanner, camera, etc. I really did not want to have an external hard-drive to do so as it would have occupied an additional USB port, not to mention it would be another gadget with cords, etc. I just wanted something simple and functional and in that sense this computer is rather unique.
Regarding battery life, this laptop is pretty amazing. Indeed it lasts over 7 hours, I've never really measured the usage time on a charge but I have used it all throughout a day without needing to have it plugged in. Another remarkable thing is that the computer does not warm up that much. It stays very cool and comfortable on your lap.
I am running Spyware Doctor as my antivirus and I am not sure if it is it or Windows 7 security that does not allow me to visit or download certain attachments from the Internet. The only browser that I can run with ease is Mozilla Firefox but every once in a while it crashes or freezes. I have tried running Internet Explorer but it is too slow and it also freezes. Safari is nearly impossible to run. At this point, I don't think the problem is the machine, I think it may be Windows 7 or some other software that causes these issues.
So overall, considering the price of this machine, it is a real bargain and an awesome value. And it will knock out any netbook off its feet.
small with DVD April 12, 2010 tp (texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Received last week from Amazon. Replacing a 5yr old HP laptop with Pentium M. Had originally purchased a Sony 14" but decided that battery life and reduced weight was more important since I travel alot. Having the DVD built in, instead of external, is what made this the best option for me. I had borrowed a netbook from a friend and after having to carry the external drive I realized it was a pain in the rear not having it included. Start up and shut down on this is quick and easy, great screen, easy to read. If you are looking for a computer for basic, home, school, business functions, not sure I could suggest a better option at this price point. I had also looked at ASUS u20a-b2, which offered slightly stronger processor, a chicklet backlit keyboard, and bluetooth, but at a cost of 30% more.
Way better than a netbook. March 22, 2010 Brandon (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was looking for a travel notebook with Intel core 2 duo and DVD drive and I preorderd the new sony Z series with Intel Core i7-620M and canceled it after this came out with 1/3 of the price of sony. OK, sony has TPM, Blue-ray drive, Fingerprint reader, and SSD with Raid 0. But, if you are looking for a cheap small and light notebook with DVD drive, this should be your first choice. Works great with 5400 RPM drive that come with it. But, I replaced it with 128GB Corsair CMFSSD-128GBG2D SSD and it rocks. Not recommended for gaming. Only thing I don't like is the glossy finish which attract fingerprints.
