| Jump Lists New in Windows 7, Jump Lists take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right-click a program icon on the Windows 7 taskbar. (You'll also find them on the Start menu.) What you see in a Jump List depends entirely on the program. The Jump List for Internet Explorer 8 shows frequently-viewed websites. Windows Media Player 12 lists commonly-played tunes. Your Jump List missing a favorite? You can "pin" whatever files you like there. Jump Lists don't just show shortcuts to files. Sometimes they also provide quick access to commands for things like composing new eâmail messages or playing music. Improved Windows Taskbar In Windows 7 you can "pin" favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. Not crazy about the icon lineup? Now you can rearrange them any way you like by clicking and dragging. Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews--a big time saver. Snap Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again--and your windows are back. Ready to move up to a dual-core? This Intel Pentium processor-based PC is a good place to start. The Intel Pentium processor is the fast dual-core that lets you surf the web and run multiple applications simultaneously. So you can browse, IM, download music or transfer photos all at once. And use office applications, too. With the 2.1 GHz Intel Pentium T4300 dual-core processor, you'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. And its Intel 64 architecture is also ready for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, and offers enhanced performance through improved virtual memory. It has a 1 MB L2 cache and an 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

I'm not a fan. :( July 25, 2010 A. McCartney (NC, USA) I bought my Inspiron 1545 last October when I had major hardware issues with my last laptop that couldn't be fixed (the laptop was four years old and the parts were not manufactured anymore), and I have had problems with it from less than a month after I bought it until now. I have had to replace my DC port twice - and I'm not just a klutzy person. I've never dropped my laptop, I unplug the power cord nicely, etc. and I still have problems with this. For reference, I had my previous laptop for four years and never had to replace the DC port once. I also have had software issues with this computer - I once spent two hours on the phone with customer support wondering why my keyboard wasn't working, and it turns out there was spyware on my laptop. Um... what? I've never had spyware cause the keyboard to stop functioning in any other computer I've used or owned, so that one was definitely new. Recently, my Inspiron has started giving me the "Plugged in, not charging" message when I plug it in, and tapping the computer or wiggling the power cord is fixing it so far, but I sense my third DC port repair in less than a year coming up. I'm not pleased with my purchase and I wish I'd taken it back the first time I'd noticed something was wrong, but I had already started to accumulate programs and files on it and didn't want to start all over. Let's just say I've learned my lesson.
Worst Laptop Ever! July 1, 2010 Redhill (Eastern USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I won't even get in to the customer service...or lack therof. I ordered the laptop in mid-March, received it in late March. Right out of the box it was a nightmare. It was taking 5 minutes + to boot up and within the first couple of days I got the dreaded BSOD. Finally, after 10 days of this, I did the customer service circus and finally got an authorization for a replacement machine. That came in early April and all was fine, initially.
After using it for a couple of weeks (and I use it for the average home computer stuff), I noticed that the touch pad would get very warm - uncomfortabye so - as well as the area around it and usually the keyboard as well. It made it nearly impossible to use unless I was going to type with just the my fingernails and with my hands held at an awkward angle so there's be no chance of touching the wrist rest.
Cue the circus music for another round of customer service. This time, they wanted me to ship the computer to them so they could repair it - which I was unwilling to do. How am I to know they'll actually repair it? It was also going to be at my expense since I was outside of 22 days...I'm not sure what 22 days is about.
After many phone calls, including finally tracking down a number for their corporate offices in Texas (hint, google Dell, Inc. SEC filings if you want a number here in the states), I finally spoke to a regional manager. Yet another replacement was authorized. I received said replacement two days ago. This time it wasn't even a couple of days or weeks before the heating problem started...it was more like a couple of minutes after turning it on.
After still more calls to the regional manager, I was once more reassured that they lack any kind of customer service. I was basically told that I was imagining the heating issue (as well as everyone else on their support forums complaining of the same issue), and they weren't going to do anything about...I'd just have to deal with it.
Well, I took matters into my own hands. I exercised my right to cancel the order. They'll be getting their defective equipment back, I'll be getting refund and purchasing an HP instead.
I have been a loyal Dell customer for over twelve years. Even though their customer service was horrible, I couldn't argue about how good the product was. That isn't the case anymore. It seems all they can produce now is a defective product to match their defective customer service.
Glorified desktop June 16, 2010 Kevin S. 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Anyone considering buying this product owes it to themselves to look into the a/c adapter issue.
Basically, Dell engineers its hardware only to "read" Dell branded adapters. After 12.5 months (just out of warranty), I received a message that Dell could not recognize my battery. The fragile pin it uses to identify it's own hardware breaks very easily, rendering the entire computer unable to charge.
The computer still works, so long as it is plugged into an outlet. But, from what I can can gather, this problem is nearly universal. For my needs, it renders the computer a sort of toy. The fix will run you about $400.
Dell is aware of the problem, but has chosen to do nothing about it. The fact that it tends to trigger just after warranty expires obviously gives them no incentive to improve.
For more information, Google the phrase: "ac power adapter type cannot be determined". This very specific query yields 14,700 results.
Ultra wide screen suitable mostly for movies June 12, 2010 Francis T (Arlington, MA United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I bought this machine I thought it would be a wide screen similar to my wife's 2 year old laptop. Then I discovered this was 16:9 compared with hers that was 16:10. This does not seem too big a difference but it means a smaller screen for the same diagonal -- hence cheaper to make. More importantly it means that the screen is of limited use for most work uses; anything where a decent vertical dimension is useful.
Even web pages have to be constantly scrolled up or down. Before you buy any 16:9 laptop just try editing a document, making an Amazon purchase, or whatever you do most on a borrowed 16:9 machine.
broke within 6 months June 7, 2010 K. Nugent 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this product in December 2009. It is 6 months later, and already the motherboard is busted and the AC adaptor connection has failed. Dell, in its traditional fashion, has bounced me around to 50 different departments when I call about getting it fixed. Apparently, according to one technician who was probably a little too honest, the problem with the AC adaptor failing to hold a connection and charge the battery is one that Dell knows about. Way to put another quality computer on the market, Dell! So now I have to waste my time and money to get this fixed.
I use this computer for basic functions -- internet surfing, watching DVDs, storing pictures, and word processing. Nothing special, certainly nothing that should've caused the system to become overwhelmed or corrupted and fail! This will be the absolute last product I buy from Dell, ever. Amazon has a bunch of great options -- if you don't want frustration after less than half a year, at least consider some of the alternatives.
