Product Description
The LaCie Big Disk Network offers professional, reliable, central storage for instantly storing, sharing, and backing up from any computer on your network. Manage your home or small office network easily with this full-featured file server, recommended for networks with up to 50 users. Get extra security and increase data portability by backing up your LaCie Big Disk Network - on your own schedule - to an external hard drive through its USB port using the built-in backup system. The LaCie Big Disk Network comes also with Genie Backup Manager Pro for Windows and Intego Backup Manager Pro for Mac to install on each PC/Mac for client backups to the NAS. With the LaCie Big Disk Network, it's easy to download big files using its integrated torrent server, without even needing your computer to be turned on. You can also play your media files stored in your Big Disk Network directly on any UPnP AV-compatible device or via a Digital Media Adapter (DMA). In fact, the Big Disk Network has been developed to be compatible with any DLNA multimedia device, and also works with iTunes. Controlling access is simple; you can assign various security levels to shares, groups, user profiles, and public access. With Windows ADS domain support, there's no need to recreate existing user and group accounts of your Windows domain, making it easy to manage for IT Administrators. Thanks to the wake-on-LAN feature, the LaCie Big Disk Network can be switched back to operating mode from the client side.

1 out of 5 stars Absolute rubbish - should be outlawed   March 31, 2010

We own an IT outsourced company so we do projects of various levels for many different types of clients. Occasionally we have clients that have need for a simple NAS type device that they want to use to take disks backups offsite or other simple uses. I started using LACIEs because of the portability and what I thought would have been simplicity.

However these devices fail at being able to perform the most basic tasks (1)join to a Windows Domain and (2) create shares for the backups. They worked for a while then after DST (daylight saving time) kicked in the devices were no longer accessible apparently due to the clock becoming "not synchronized" with the Domain. Simple enough to fix right.

WRONG. This was the beginning of a hell trip that has taken us two weeks thus far and it still is not resolved. Apparently you have to unjoin the devices from the network to set the time. Interestingly the time for whatever reason went way off. We set the devices to the same time and time zone as the domain and all attempts to rejoin them failed. The devices are now permanently stuck at "Please reconnect in a few minutes" no mater how many times we reboot.

This happened to three separate devices, two different models. Every search on the Web suggest that the devices had to be sent back and replacements acquired on encountering this error state. So that is the path we will have to take with these junk boxes.

Don't waste you money with these crappy devices. The Seagate NAS 110 is far more reliable from what I have heard.

I have ordered and installed 3 of these so far. I came dead on arrival, the others worked good. The time stamp was incorrect for one and I contacted support but they were useless. Otherwise, all looks good.

Very good product, easy installation.

Had a little software problem with an error message. I called service dept but they were not very helpfull in terms of bringing a solution to the problem. I still have the error message and hopefully I'll get it resolved.
