Editorial Reviews:

Amazon Product Description
Sleekly styled and comfortably ergonomic, Sony's K Series notebooks offer affordable, all-purpose portability for home computing, home office needs, and students. The PCG-K33P balances your productivity and entertainment needs, with an integrated 54G wireless LAN to keep you connected inside and outside your home and a suite of preloaded Sony multimedia applications for managing your digital audio and photo collections. It also comes with a double layer DVD+/- RW drive that can burn both DVDs and CDs. Other features include a 15.4-inch screen, 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a Memory Stick slot.

The PCG-K35 features a 15.4-inch WXGA widescreen display that is perfectly tailored to the aspect ratio favored by DVD movies.

The Basics
  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive is larger than the average notebook's, enabling road warriors more than enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
  • Processor: The 3.06 GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4 is a powerful processor that was designed to be used with notebooks used as a desktop replacement PC. It includes Intel's Enhanced SpeedStep technology, which helps cut the power used by the chip and conserves battery power. It has a front-side bus (FSB) of 533 MHz and a 1 MB L2 cache.
  • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (2 x 256 MB, PC2100, 266 MHz DDR SDRAM) has become standard with notebooks, and it's a good start. But you'll want to take advantage of the 1 GB expandability to get the most out of this computer.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The PCG-K35 offers the latest in DVD writing technology with a that's compatible with DVD+R dual-layer discs. Double-layered DVD+R discs can store up to 8.5 GB of data and can be written at 2.4x speed. It's also compatible with standard DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs (which can be written at 8x and rewritten at 4x). You can write and rewrite CDs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard with electrostatic touchpad.

Sound and Graphics
The included ATI Radeon IGP 345M video/graphics card provides competent, but not overpowering, 3D graphics. It features 64 MB of shared video memory. This is taken from the main system memory, so you'll want to increase your RAM from the installed 512 MB if you plan on doing much gaming or video work. The enhanced widescreen format function (1280 x 800 pixels) lets you watch DVDs in full cinema mode as well as easily view spreadsheets and Web browsers side-by-side. It also offers an integrated audio card, built-in speakers, A/V connection out, and the ability to drive an external monitor.

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players

  • 1 Memory Stick slot (Memory Stick Pro compatible)

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). It also has a hot-swappable bay for adding an optional optical drive or second battery."

Preloaded System and Software
This notebook comes with the Windows XP Home Edition, and it features Microsoft Works 8.0 (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). It also is loaded with a bevy of Sony multimedia software: PictureGear Studio (digital photo), SonicStage (digital music), Vaio Media (network file sharing, Click to DVD (DVD burning), and DVgate Plus (digital video). Other preloaded software includes Microsoft Money and Encarta, InterVideo WinDVD, and Norton Internet Security Center (with 90-day subscription).

Dimensions and Weight
Measuring 1.6-2.2 x 14.1 x 10.9 inches (H x W x D) and weighing 8.2 pounds, the PCG-K35 is bit larger than other notebooks in its range. It's best used as a desktop replacement while offering portability when you need it.

Power
The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery (PCGA-BP2NY) offers an average battery life range of 1.5 hours (depending on usage).

5 out of 5 stars Unexpextedly happy...   October 8, 2007
This was the first pc of any type that I didn't build personally or, research (in great detail). I was returning an HP notebook that was full of problems at best buy and the pc tech took mercy on me (after having it serviced by best buy through the warranty-(11 issues when it was sent it came back with 2 of the issues fixed). So, This was an easy argument. The tech at the store said to pick a notebook then and there so I would not have to deal with further "fixing". My wife pushed this viao and here we are. I have to say this has been a rock-solid work horse. The big downer is the 64meg video which ruins this laptop for any games. Otherwise, this is a very solid pc/desktop replacement. No issues, fast and furious. And, I do lot's of stuff with my pc's...Solid performer

3 out of 5 stars An Average Laptop At Best   May 13, 2006

Although it does have some good points, like a very nice display, and USB ports EZ access, there are some serious faults with this machine. As everyone has pointed out, the battery life is practically nil, the fan is noisy, and to top it off, in the last year and 1/2, I've had to replace the battery and the hard disc. Thanks to the Best Buy extended warranty, this hasn't been a financial burden. The warranty has paid for itself. But, it is extremely burdensome and I am wondering what's going to fail next. It is not your best option to buy this machine, even though it is an adequate desktop replacement.

5 out of 5 stars Great Desktop Replacement   November 4, 2005

When I bought my K35 I was intentionally looking for a desktop replacement meaning that it would be easy on my eyes and large enough for me to work with. It has never locked up on me in the year that I have had it. Everytime I turn it on I am as happy as the day I bought it because it still runs like a dream. Yes it is heavy but I knew that when I bought it because for some oddity of my own it makes me feel more secure that I will not crush it. This is a great computer for college students like myself and I would recommend it to anyone looking to replace their desktop.

2 out of 5 stars Heavy power consumption   September 7, 2005

I have been very disappointed with this computer. It is supposed to be portable but the battery life is so poor that you have to be near mains power. I find that I get just over half an hour from the battery before it needs recharging. I cannot watch a DVD film on it using battery power. The power requirement is so high that I cannot find an Air/Car 12v adapter powerful enough to charge the battery. This machine is a step backwards not a step forwards.
I contacted Sony and I didnt find their advice useful. They could only suggest the things I had already tried through "Help" etc. From this experience I would not buy a Sony again.

4 out of 5 stars Great laptop with a few minor issues   July 26, 2005
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

I bought this for my wife, and she loves it. Many of the complaints listed are valid, like the short battery life and noisy fan. The noisy fan keeps the laptop cool, I have had no issues with it burning my lap. We did have to send it in to get the DVD drive replaced, but that was fairly painless. It goes into hibernation all the time, and we have never had an issue with it locking up. It actually returns to normal operation much faster than I am used to with desktops. Display is incredible. My 3 biggest issues with this laptop are: (1) noisy fan, (2) no good port replicator/docking station & (3) no auto/air adapter. Number 3 is by far my biggest gripe due to the lacking battery life. Other than these 3, I really think it was a great deal. Next time I know to check for docking station and auto/air adapter compatibility before I buy.
