Product Description
The Epson Perfection V500 Photo features a built-in transparency unit for positive or negative film up to medium format. It scans 12 frames of 35mm filmstrip, four frames of mounted 35mm slides or 1 frame of 6x12cm medium format film at once, ideal for preserving old family images. Four easy access buttons are located on the front of the scanner to initiate scan to application, scan to PDF, scan to email and copy. They offer a quick and easy way to scan an image without the need to access settings on the computer. The scan to PDF function allows an image or multiple pages to be scanned and automatically saved to a specified PDF file, while the scan to email button allows documents or images to be copied and sent anywhere in the world at the touch of a button. Software provided with the Perfection V500 Photo includes the new Epson Scan 3.2 and Epson Creativity Suite. Epson Scan is designed to make scanning easy with its automatic mode and home mode. The needs of the advanced user are addressed with the professional mode. Epson Scan 3.2 offers high compression multi-page PDF scanning and allows ICC profiles to be embedded into the scanned files. Colour reproduction for negative scanning delivers superior image quality in critical or mixed lighting conditions. It also offers an advanced backlight correction to improve the overall visibility in the image. Digital ICE Technology ensures dust and scratches are completely removed from colour films, creating high-quality results. Additional software includes Adobe PhotoShop Elements 4 (PC) and 3 (Mac) and ABBYY FineReader Sprint 6 Plus. An optional Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is available for small offices that wish to use the Perfection V500 Photo for higher volumes of document scanning. Full software package - Epson Scan 3.2, Epson Creativity Suite, Digital ICE, Adobe Elements 4 (PC) and 3(Mac) and ABBYY FineReader Sprint 6 Plus Mac and PC compatible

5 out of 5 stars V500Scanner   March 5, 2010

4 out of 5 stars On film   March 3, 2010
Stephen Mcconnel (CA Wine Country)
Before purchasing an Epson Perfection V500 Scanner I read only the one star (bad) reviews. As I needed a way to scan 120/220 films, I took the plunge and bought one anyway. Most of the negative reviews seemed to revolve around software issues, particularly the supplied Photoshop Elements program. I have had no problems in this area, although, I already had Photoshop Elements 2.0 in my PC and did not use the supplied program. I have Photoshop Elements 6 in my MacBook Pro, but have not tried using the Epson V500 with that computer and program, yet.
I do, however, have issues with what appears to be the V500's inability to manually crop while scanning films. I am scanning film sizes from ViewMaster chips to 6x9 and everything between. The scanner is very hit-or-miss when scanning the ViewMaster reels, even set to scan 6x9 films. It cuts my reels into segments sometimes through the middle of an image. If I isolated a single film chip, the scanner says it can't find it and won't scan.
The scanner also seems to lack any method for manual focusing, creating problems when laying ViewMaster-style reels directly on the glass and when scanning glass mounted slides. If the scanner is capable of manual cropping when scanning film, and/or can be manually focused, I have not found instructions on how to do these things. The Users Guide is disappointingly limited.
Also, scans fail when scanning at extremely high resolution setting, but I don't know if this is an issue with the scanner or my computer.

3 out of 5 stars Great scanner - lousy software   March 1, 2010
J. Mackay (Durango CO)
The scanner itself is sleek and quiet. It fits in a small space which is great. It comes with a couple of 'templates' that allow you to load various size photos and slides for scanning.

But the software is awful, at least on the Mac. It took my MacBook Pro a long time to load the installation app, and then the install hung. I finally got it to work, and the resulting application is very clunky and not very intuitive, even for a guy who has a computer engineering degree.

The ultimate bait and switch was the Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 software that came with it. The disk wouldn't even load on my Mac. When I went to the Adobe website, I discovered that they don't even sell 6 any more - they are on Elements 8 now and barely support 6. The online rep basically told me that I was out of luck. So, I ended up buying 8 for $100 because you need photo editing software if you are going to be scanning a lot of shots with your new scanner.

Great machine. Excellant transfers and great for reproducing old odd size black and white negatives. As usual, the instructions are worthless. A lot of trial and error to figure it out.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Negative Scanning   February 10, 2010
Ronald G. Gillis (Illinois, USA)
I purchased this scanner specifically for scnaning of medium format negatives 2.25 x 2.25. I am totally blown away by the quality of the scans. I had previously purchase an HP Scanner for the same negatives, and was severly disappointed in the quality. The Digital ICE technology seemed too good to be true, thus I was skeptical of it, but be assured it does exactly was it says, and it does deliver. I have only scanned a few printed pictures with the scanner, and found the results to be only average.
