This is all you really need in an Internet Device, Plus! January 27, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the perfect laptop PC for someone that likes to travel lite or just needs the basics. Everything works. I have a few complaints; no modem or usb-modem that works right. And the touch pad is only fair, you really need a usb mouse.
Asus eee 4g Surf - - Just what I wanted January 27, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I wanted a handy little computer to surf the net and show and tell stuff while traveling in our travel trailer, and around the house. I build boats as a hobby and go to many wooden boat shows, so have lots of pics to share. I belong to many interest groups and like to keep up and communicate. The Asuseee Surf is great, like they say "works right out the box." WiFi access is quick and strong every place I have been. The machine is very quick, as good or better than my up to date home pc. I was somewhat concerned about having to learn a new OS, but there really is nothing to learn. All the user interfaces are graphic, you just click on what you want.
Even the Asus updates are automatic in the "Update" icon. I'm totally happy with the machine, an excellent buy. No problems. Easy to add extra storage memory. There are user groups to chat with on maximizing use. The Asus website is full of all kinds of stuff. Customer support is quick and excellent - 24/7. I especially like it over other low priced notebooks like Dell and so on, because it is all flash driven. No moving parts except for small totally silent fan. The only addition I would like to see is a waterproof model to use on my boat for navigation -- therefore I need some gps and navigation plug ins too.

Takes a step forward by taking a step back January 25, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The Asus eee PC is the funnest little gizmo I've seen in a while. I bought it as a satellite unit for my real computer but I find myself using it more often than my powerhouse. It's very light, so I take it everywhere I go, and while it's only 800mhz it's a nimble little thing. It boots in about 20 seconds, and Xandros is the kindest version of Linux I've seen. When you start out it has these big icons that make it easy for kids to use, but I switched over to "Advanced Mode" which makes it look and act like a Windows clone. This is a nice way to dabble in Linux without making the plunge. It works well with most common USB add-ons, flash drives, mice and keyboards, even the Xbox 360 HD DVD player. But sadly, there is no iTunes for Linux and when you plug your iPod in, it launches it's mp3 player and plays select songs. It does charge it at least. The typewriter is a bit small but it's touchtype-able, (I use just six fingers, my pinkies get a break) After using it a while regular keyboards seem really big. Bottom line, This is a great secondary computer and it seems it was designed with being a back up in mind (It comes with a DVD that requires Windows to play) But it's a lot of computer for the money and it's got an extensive and friendly online community that can walk you through pretty much anything you could want to do with it. You'll see why it's got a worldwide cult following. Perfect for students and children.
Little Noted Features of the EEE January 20, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Much of the great stuff is in the Advanced Desktop mode. Unfortunately, the Advanced Desktop mode is hidden, and, if you don't get to it in the right way, you end up with a double boot at startup which takes twice as long, and I have yet to find a way to get straight to the single boot.
If you get into the Advanced Desktop mode, you will find many amazing programs.
1.There is a function plotting program. You can enter an equation for any single variable function and the program will display a plot of the function. It will also find the minimum or maximum of the function between any two points. It will also find the area under the curve between any two points. Very nice. 2.There is a fascinating geometry program I haven't had the time to use. You can draw all kinds of geometric figures such as circles, arcs, polygons, vectors, conics, etc and make transformations like harmonic homologies (???). Could be useful and possibly a lot of fun for kids taking geometry who might have an idea about what a harmonic homology is. 3.There is a interesting chemical periodic table with all sorts of information about all the chemical elements. I know just about everything about chemistry, so i don't need that. I know that if you mix Chemical A with Chemical B you get Chemical C unless the temperature is above 50 degrees Celcius in which case you get Chemical D or if the relative humidity is above 50%, then you get Chemical E or if the pressure is above 1.3 atm., then you get Chemical F, or if it Thursday, forget about it. You don't get anything on Thursday. 4.Then, there is the super neat "Desktop Planetarium - I mean super neat. First, you have to tell it where you live, and it seems to know where just about every little dinky town on the planet is. I live out in what used to be country before there was sprawl, and it has both of the small towns near me. It seems like it has every town with at least one stoplight. The EEE knows the date, so you just tell it what direction you want to look, and it will show you where every star is. You can specify that you want to know where visible constellations are and it will show the constellations in any specified direction. There is a "What's Up Tonight" function - meaning in the sky, I assume.
The EEE is an amazing computer. You just can't go wrong with it.
I do not work for ASUS, THIS IS A MUST BUY!! January 17, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Look at the title and my disclaimer is that I am a Linux user, however, I also use XP user and the fact is the following, with either Windows or Linux, it would be a mistake to pass this up. I almost bought a MAC and I would have bought a Vista laptop, because I doubted the reviews. I am typing this review on the ASUS micro laptop! I have only used it less than two hours and I already can see that I made the right choice!! I will tell you that at first the keyboard is small, but you really get use to it, and tactile on it is great. I said I was a Linux USER. This version of the SURF is great, no need to mess around tar and xg'ing, media is available and works perfectly. Then there is the speed, the portability, make no mistakes folks, this is the laptop to getI I am using an 8gb card for my removable media. I intend to further upgrade, only if needed. Great job ASUS! I also got the Nokia Internet tablet, but not from AMAZON,(sorry Amazon) at the time they had the higher price, but,not any more! Its a great companion with the Asus, to counter act the battery life. BTW, looking forward to a time that they have a longer lasting battery. Take my advice, try it for yourself! PS, the price on this machine went up since I last bought it, I would certainly get it while they have these models at this price!
