Not Only for Kids, But Also for Business Travelers January 25, 2008 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I bought it for my daughter's gift, but surprisingly it's perfect for my business travel. Why? It's very, very fast. Thanks to Linux OS, starting up takes just only 10-15 seconds, shutting down takes only a second! Firefox web browser is great, it's much better than IE in terms of stability. OpenOffice is comparable to Microsoft office, so you can read and write Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. OWA (Outlook Web Access) works well, so you can access to office mailbox. Skype also works well, so you can easily do video conference. For kids, there are many pre-installed educational software, it's easy to use and fun. Easy to bring, durable, and super value. I can't believe it's only $399! It enough for me. iPhone? there's no keyboard. MacBook Air? it's super expensive. Windows PC? so many problems (slow, freeze, security issue.) I believe ASUS Eee PC is REVOLUTION. I don't need Apple, Microsoft, and Dell. PC eco-system is changing. Try it. Believe me.
Good concept January 23, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
So far experience with it has been pretty good. We kept it Linux. It reads shared dirs ok. Everything works fine and it's relatively quick. Only glitch so far is it self set the trackpad to the lowest sensitivity and it was not easy to reset it. Trick now is will ASUS follow through and support the product. Needs much more RAM; both as a HD and for RAM.
I love this thing January 20, 2008 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have a full sized laptop that is not really a laptop at all. It is a full fledged desk computer that I move with it's power brick from one desk to another. It will do a lot and hold a lot but with a short battery life it is not really portable. The eee is what I have been looking for and didn't know it. It is small, truly portable and does what I want. I check and write email. I surf the web and I create office documents. The eee does all of this and I don't feel like I have to treat it like a baby -- with an expensive case and a bag of support supplies.
I thought I would have trouble with the small keyboard, but after a short learning curve to figure out the way to hold your hands it works just fine. It worked great out of the box. I installed the full desktop but don't even bother with it any more. The easy linux desktop covers everything I need.
In the past I have been overimpressed with storage. My old laptop has a big ole hard drive that is mostly empty. With flash drives and all the options for data storage these days, I see no need to have it all in my computer. The eee, with its small storage (and no hard drive) works just fine.
I love this thing.
Fits in my bag January 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this as a Christmas gift for myself and so far I've been quite happy. There are a few things that I'm still working on, but overall this is exactly what I need. Since other reviewers have given in-depth reviews about this machine, I will focus my review on how it meets my personal requirements. I have a desktop unit that was custom built in 2003, and a 14 inch laptop that was purchased the same year. They've been serving my needs well, but now I'm on-the-go most of the time, from one appointment to another, at different locations. I have to carry a briefcase to bring all the files/folders with me, so the only room I have is in my tote/handbag. The EeePC is small enough to fit in most of my handbags and light enough to carry in a tote/handbag. I bought it in black because my job is more on the serious/conservative side. I feel comfortable typing on it during my appointments, it does not look like a gadget at all. I don't think I would be able to do the same with an iPhone.
It took me awhile to adjust to the touchpad though. I was so used to using my index finger to point and my thumb to click. It didn't work very well with this machine, most of the time I had to press the left button repeatedly to make it click. Finally I figured out that I need to change my finger placement, now I use my index finger to press the right and left button, and my middle finger to point. My thumb now supports the bottom edge of the computer when I press and click.
A Great Buy January 18, 2008 At this moment I'm sitting in a coffee shop happily typing away on my Eee PC. I've had it for just about a week (after super quick - FREE shipping).
I can not be more pleased with this product than if I designed it myself.
First let me say that most people are worried about the size of the keyboard, and I can understand how people with big hands may have trouble with it; but since I have small hands the keyboard works perfectly. I had a little trouble adjusting to it, but now that I'm used to it I find it is less tiring on the hands because there isn't so much reaching. I did spend an hour when I first got this playing a typing game so as to adjust to it.
The other big complaint is the size of the screen, but I find it is not too small, and I've become quite adjusted to it.
The operating system is very intuitive and I haven't been hampered in the least in accomplishing my day to day tasks (I of course still have my desk top for big jobs - like typing 10 page papers) and this is the perfect PC for taking notes. It fits nicely on a desk with room for a spiral notebook next to it for taking down diagrams. It's all so quite an eye catcher and many people with have bugged eyes saying "THAT'S A LAPTOP?" And I smile smugly and say "Yes. A fully functioning laptop."
Now I want to mention the only real problem I've had with this machine, and that's connecting to the wireless network at my school. The problem becomes that the Eee supports WEP and WPA and my school network of course uses neither of these. However this problem will be fixed this weekend with the help of a long time linux user and the Eee PC user forum which has been invaluable.
I can't help but say how much I'm enjoying this intuitive and versatile laptop. (And its so CUTE!)
