Makes Netflix and other services even more valuable July 31, 2010 Cycling pastor (Nebraska) I've been a subscriber to MLB-TV for two years and just began using Netflix within the last 6 months. I'd heard about Roku but had always tried to just connect my computer up to the TV through S-Video cable. With my Windows 7 64 bit install, Netflix was hit or miss with Silverlight on my laptop, so I decided to get a Roku. Incredible choice and great value. I can tie in my Amazon Video on Demand, Netflix and MLB-TV account and it works wonderfully! In fact, it's so easy to use, and makes having the various online services like MLB-TV and Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand worth every penny.
If You Love Netflix..This is the ticket July 30, 2010 Recorder (H. Bch., CA.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I tried streaming Netflix to my HDTV from my laptop (admittedly, not HD), and was very disappointed.
The video was very grainy and had tons of judder.
It looked worse than a home video on VHS posted to YouTube!
I decided it was time to get a proper solution, and the price, as well as positive reviews for the Roku, seemed to fit my requirements. I didn't opt for the model with USB & N wireless, because I don't need either.
What differentiated it from the WD Live Plus was the fact that it supports g wireless networking, and I have a wireless router in my computer room. I didn't want to have to purchase an access point, or other networking gear, or have to run a LAN cable to my HDTV in the living room.
The Roku box was very easy to configure on my wireless network, and it was up and running within 20 minutes.
I registered for Netflix, and Amazon.com, and was watching a Netflix movie within another 10 minutes, so 30 minutes total set up time. Later that evening, I added the Roku to my Harmony One remote activites, and put the Roku remote in my "Remotes drawer".
Netflix streams 720P, and even with my meager 3mbs DSL connection, the quality is excellent.
The audio is only 2.0 Stereo, but with Dolby prologic enabled on my Denon AVR, it's totally acceptable.
I've perused the Roku forum on their website, and it is possible to create some channels to enable media streaming from the PC, but haven't had the need to do so, yet.
So, as the title states, if you really love Netflix streaming, and you have a BluRay player, or other devices that are NOT Netflix ready, this is a very easy decision to make.
Try it, you won't regret it.
ROKU ROCKS!!! July 30, 2010 J.Go. (Bay Area, CA) We got this a couple of months ago. It was initially quite disappointing as the Netflix streaming quality over WiFi downright SUCKED. We even considered returning this back to Amazon. Before doing that though, we decided to give it another shot by hooking it up to the internet using some powerline Ethernet adapters rather than WiFi. We were glad that we did...The box now streams HD videos from Netflix with no hiccups whatsoever. We haven't looked back ever since. Roku Rocks and Netflix RULES!!!
Better than I expected July 30, 2010 M. Clarke (Va, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So, I have tied most of the other options for streaming Netflix (my REAL reason for buying Roku). I have tried Sony blu-ray player streaming, Samsung blu-ray player streaming, PS3 (must use a disc to stream which is a pain), Wii streaming (again using the disc but interface is better but no HD) and Xbox360. Now the Xbox360 does a great job with Netflix streaming but I needed a solution in my bedroom that wouldn't cost me the price of another Xbox360. So I gave the Roku HD a shot. It's simple and to the point on what it is designed for. Set-up was easy and all I had to do is set the display to 16:9 HD and the sound to surround. The interface is HD quality and is very easy to read at a distance. I have a large bedroom where my 40inch LCD is 12 feet away from my bed. The Netflix interface is awesome and looks great. The navigation is fluid and user friendly. Movie playback quality is the best I have seen from any of the streaming devices I have used. Even SD selections look near HD. I am very impressed by this Roku unit so far. I have only had it for a couple of days. The Roku HD unit appears to be made well enough and I was surprised at how solid the remote is. All works well so far so good. My configuration is: HDMI, Digital optical out to receiver and hard-wire to LAN (I may try the built-in wireless at some point just to see if it works properly). I have found that there is a load of content for most people (especially an IT guy like myself). I was able to get this unit for $69.99 so I must say that this was a very good value.
